Why chemo patients shouldn't drive themselves home

Oncology day-case treatment is one of the strangest things about modern cancer care. You walk in, you have hours of infusion, and you walk out — apparently fine. Many patients feel well enough at the door of the day unit that they tell themselves they could drive home. By the time they're on the M50 they regret it.

Chemo-related side effects have unpredictable timing. Some are immediate (nausea, dizziness, hot flushes). Some land hours later (profound fatigue, neuropathy in hands and feet, brain fog, sleep crashes). For the patients on regimens that include steroids, energy can spike during the infusion and crash hours after. None of this makes for safe driving.

Most Irish oncology nurses recommend not driving home after infusion — and many patients hear that, agree, and still end up doing it because they didn't want to ask anyone for a lift. Here2Help takes that ask off your shoulders. We turn up, we wait, we drive you home, we settle you.

What's included in a post-chemo discharge

🪑

Day-unit pickup

Companion comes to the day-oncology unit, identifies at the nurses' station, takes the discharge instructions and any prescribed take-home medication.

💧

Hydration and snacks ready

Water and a plain snack in the car for the drive home. Many patients need both within 30 minutes of leaving the unit.

🚗

Smooth route home

Gentle pace, calm route, climate controlled. We avoid motorway sections when an alternative works better for a tired patient.

🛏️

Settled before we leave

Inside, somewhere comfortable, hydration set up, blankets to hand, family or housemate informed you're home. We stay until you're truly settled.

Recurring bookings for treatment cycles

Most chemotherapy regimens run on weekly or bi-weekly cycles for months at a time. If you book Here2Help once, you can book us every cycle — and we'll do everything we can to send you the same companion each time. Familiarity matters when you're going through something this hard.

Recurring bookings can be paid per session or arranged as a package. Email us with your treatment schedule and we'll suggest the cleanest setup for you. There's no extra fee for recurring bookings; we just hold the slots.
